A Collective Reading of Vincent Katz

Join us for a reading of Vincent Katz’s new collection of poems, “Broadway for Paul,” with poets Norma Cole, Kyle Dacuyan, Elaine Equi, Patricia Spears Jones, Jennifer Moxley, and Jensön Olin, led by poet Vincent Katz.

Vincent Katz is the author of the poetry collections Southness (2016) and Swimming Home (2015) and of the book of translations, The Complete Elegies of Sextus Propertius (2004), which won a National Translation Award from the American Literary Translators Association. He is the editor of Black Mountain College: Experiment in Art (2002), and his writing on contemporary art and poetry has appeared in publications such as Apollo, Art in America, ARTnews, The Brooklyn Rail, and The Poetry Project Newsletter. As curator of the “Readings in Contemporary Poetry” series at Dia: Chelsea, Katz also edited the anthology Readings in Contemporary Poetry (Dia Art Foundation, 2017). He lives in New York City.

Norma Cole is a poet, painter, and translator. She was born in Toronto, Canada, and attended the University of Toronto for her BA in Modern Languages and MA in French. Her translation works include Danielle Collobert’s Journals (1989), Anne Portugal’s Nude (2001), and Fouad Gabriel Naffah’s The Spirit God and the Properities Of Nitrogen (2004). She has also edited and translated Crosscut Universe: Writing on Writing from France (2000),an anthology of poetry and poetics by contemporary French writers. Cole has authored various books of poetry, including Natural Light (2009), Where Shadows Will: Selected Poems 1988-2008 (2009), Spinoza in Her Youth (2002), The Vulgar Tongue (2000), and Desire & Its Double (1998). In a review of her 1996 collection Contrafact, Erin Moule of Lemon Hound noted that Cole’s “meanings unfurl and gesture, resonate, play emphatic and contrapuntal gamings with language’s fluency.” Cole’s experimental work SCOUT, a text and image work, was released in 2005. From 2004 to 2006, Cole was the lead artist for Collective Memory, an installation, performance, and publication for “Poetry and its Arts: Bay area Interactions 1954-2004” commissioned by the California Historical Society in San Francisco, California.

Kyle Dacuyan writes poems and makes performance. Recent writing is in Ambit, The Offing, Social Text, and elsewhere, and he’s had recent performance pieces at FringeArts, Ars Nova, and Haus für Poesie. He is the Executive Director of The Poetry Project at St. Mark’s.

Elaine Equi was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1953. She received a BA and an MA in English from Columbia College, where she taught a poetry workshop for several years after graduating. Along with her husband, Jerome Sala, she was active in Chicago’s performance poetry scene. Equi’s first book, Federal Woman, was published in 1978 by Danaides Press. She has written over ten books of poetry, including The Intangibles (Coffee House Press, 2019); Ripple Effect: New and Selected Poems (Coffee House Press, 2007), which was shortlisted for the 2008 International Griffin Poetry Prize; and Voice-Over (Coffee House Press, 1999), chosen by Thom Gunn for the San Francisco State Poetry Award. Equi lives in New York City and teaches in the Master of Fine Arts program at The New School.

Patricia Spears Jones is a poet, educator, and author of four collections of poetry: A Lucent Fire: New & Selected Poems (White Pine Press, 2015), Painkiller (Tia Chucha Press, 2010), Femme du Monde (Tia Chucha Press, 2006), and The Weather That Kills (Coffee House Press, 1995). She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Goethe Institute, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. In 2017, Poets & Writers awarded her the Jackson Poetry Prize. A resident of New York City since the 1970s, Spears Jones currently serves as a fellow of the Black Earth Institute and has long been involved with the Poetry Project at St. Marks Church. She has taught at Cave Canem, Parsons School of Design, The New School, Sarah Lawrence College, and Naropa University, and she currently teaches at the City University of New York.

Jennifer Moxley studied literature and writing at UC San Diego and the University of Rhode Island and received her M.F.A. from Brown University in 1994. She is the author of seven books of poetry, most recently Druthers (Flood 2018). Her 2014 book, The Open Secret, was awarded the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams award and was a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Prize. She has also published a book of essays, a memoir, and three translations from the French. In 2005 she was granted the Lynda Hull Poetry Award from Denver Quarterly. Her poem “Behind the Orbits” was included by Robert Creeley in The Best American Poetry 2002. She is Professor of Poetry and Poetics at the University of Maine.

Jensön Olin studied at Cambridge & Oxford before earning his MFA from Naropa University. Olin’s first publication was A VALENTINE TO FRANK O’HARA by Erudite/Fangs/Smokeproof Press. His book BLUE COLLAR HOLIDAY was a collaboration with the painter Larry Rivers & was published by Hanging Loose in 2005. Other solo publications include a book German book titled I’M WORRYING ABOUT MY HEDGE FUND along with THE PILL BOOK from Faux Press, 2008 and the book HOLD TIGHT: THE TRUCK DARLING POEMS from Hanging Loose Press in 2010. He is currently working on a manuscript called THE HUNGER NOTEBOOK: COLLECTED POEMS to be published by Tender Buttons Press. He currently lives alone in the woods of a rural town in New England.
